Founding Letter, Church of Healing by Travis Wallis

But first, I want to tell you why.
There are moments in a life when something stops being an idea and becomes a responsibility.
The Church of Healing was not created out of theory, nor from a desire to build an institution. It comes from witnessing. From living inside environments where pain was present, but never fully met. From seeing what happens when human beings carry what was never processed, never spoken, never held.
I grew up close to that reality. My father carried the imprint of deep abuse. My mother lived with the consequences of violations that happened early and multiple times through her life. These were not abstract stories. They were lived experiences that shaped the emotional landscape of a home, the ways people spoke, the ways they withdrew, the ways they protected themselves, and the ways that programmed departing behaviors they experienced on to me.
As a child, you do not always have the language for what you are seeing. But you feel it. You absorb it. You begin to understand, in a quiet and often confusing way, that unhealed pain does not disappear. It finds expression. It moves through relationships, through bodies, through generations.
Over time, I came to see something even more clearly.
People are not broken. As Gabor Mate says, there isn’t mental illness, we simply are a function of environment. But many are carrying experiences that were never given the space to be felt, witnessed, or integrated. And when that happens, there are only a few paths available. One is to feel. The other is to numb. Most of the world has learned, in one way or another, to numb (at least in the west).
And yet, the body does not forget.
What is unprocessed often becomes what we call dis-ease. It shows up in patterns, in physical symptoms, in emotional reactivity, and in disconnection from self and others. It becomes a quiet undercurrent shaping the direction of a life.
The Church of Healing exists because there must be another path.
A path where people are given the space to feel what has been carried. A path where healing is not rushed, not forced, and not reduced to a transaction. A path where ancient wisdom traditions are honored, not as abstractions, but as living practices that help restore balance to the human system.
This work will take many forms.
At times, it will be simple. Sitting with someone one on one, offering presence, guidance, and support as they move through what is ready to be seen. At other times, it will be communal. Group gatherings, ceremonies, and shared spaces where people remember that they are not alone in what they carry.
And in time, this work will take physical form.
Through healing centers, weekend and multi-day retreats, and eventually a network of dedicated spaces where individuals can step away from their daily environments and enter into a deeper process of healing and self-understanding. These spaces are not designed as escapes, but as intentional environments where people can pause, reflect, and begin to reconnect with themselves in a more grounded and supported way.
There is no single method that defines this work. The thread that connects it is intention.
To create environments where people feel safe enough to be honest.
To reintroduce practices that help the body release what it has been holding.
To support individuals in reconnecting with their own inner guidance.
To remind people that healing is not about becoming someone new, but about returning to what was always there beneath the weight of experience.
This is not a system built on fixing people. It is built on holding space for transformation.
Part of this commitment is also service. There will always be those who cannot access this kind of work due to financial or life circumstances. The Church of Healing exists in part to bridge that gap. Through volunteer time, funding, and sponsored sessions, retreats, and journeys, the intention is to make healing accessible to those who need it most.
This is not charity in the traditional sense. It is responsibility.
Because when one person heals, it does not stop with them. It changes how they show up in their relationships, their families, and their communities. Healing has a ripple effect, and over time, those ripples begin to shape something much larger.
The vision is simple, even if the path to it is not.
A world where people are given the opportunity to face what they carry.
A world where numbing is no longer the default response to pain.
A world where spaces for healing, whether intimate or communal, are as natural and accessible as any other form of support.
The Church of Healing is one step in that direction.
It is an offering.
It is a commitment.
It is a continuation of a path that began long before this was ever written.
And it is built with the understanding that healing is not something we do alone.
